Lypsyl's Tips for Beautiful Lips
BEAUTY TIPS | 18 July 2017
How much do you actually know about your lips? Did you know that the skin on them is around four or five times thinner than the skin that covers the rest of your body? And because there are no hair or sweat follicles on lip skin, did you know that they don’t have the same level of in-built protection the rest of your skin has?
Lips are more sensitive and delicate than you might think, so it’s worth giving them some extra TLC from time to time.
“Think of your lips as a sponge’ says Annet King, senior director of global education and innovation for skincare brand Dermalogica. In an interview with refinery29.com she points out: “When exposed to moisture, they absorb water and plump up,” King explains. “When dehydrated, they dry out and shrink.”
The good news, is that it’s never too late to start taking better care of your pout. So here are some top tips to get you started.
Tip 1 – Don’t lick
When you lick your lips, it might feel like you’re hydrating them but there are salts and all sorts of other compounds in your saliva, in addition to water, which can actually increase dryness.
Tip 2 – Never pick
It should be an obvious no-no, but too many of us can’t resist picking and peeling dry lips. Removing a flake of dry skin from your top lip might feel harmless enough, but it can make overall dryness much worse and prolong healing time too, if they’re already sore or chapped.
Tip 3 – Exfoliate
Gently removing dry skin from your lips by exfoliation (not picking!) instantly creates a smooth even layer for your lip colour. You don’t have to invest in expensive lip scrubs to get the job done either. Simply mix some sugar with a little olive oil and gently buff away. Alternatively, grab an old toothbrush, sweep it across the top of your Lypsyl stick then gently massage it into both lips.
Tip 4 – Use a sunscreen
Your lips need protection from the sun’s rays just like the rest of you, so carry a Lypsyl SPF 50, which offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The velvety blend of shea butter, cocoa butter and natural beeswax will give you a vanilla scented protective layer of moisture whenever you need it. Alternatively, the other Lypsyl lip balms in our range offer SPF 15 and are available in six delicate fragrances.
Tip 5 – Go matte sparingly
When you’re shopping for a new lipstick, steer clear of too many matte shades. Although they may stay put for an impressively long time, matte lipsticks can be particularly drying. A coat of Lypsyl underneath should add a layer of moisture and stop the colour clinging to the cracks if your lips are already on the dry side.
