Ready For Your Icy Blast? Are Cold Showers Good For Your Health?

Brrrrr…does even the thought of taking an ice cold shower every morning give you the shivers?

Well, new research suggests that standing under freezing cold water regularly could be the secret to all-round better health and vitality.

In a 30-day study of 3,000 volunteers in the Netherlands, brave participants who finished off their normal daily shower with a dose of cold water reported 29 per cent fewer sick days and experienced higher energy levels. At least a third of them also said they’d be sticking to their chilly new regime.

The use of water as a possible therapy to maintain good health is nothing new but is it about time we all embraced the cold by switching off the hot tap? Possible benefits are said to include less stress, improved immunity and circulation, as well as increased alertness and mental clarity.

When you get hit with a blast of cold (best to turn the tap gradually so your body can adjust), you also tend to breathe more deeply, which in turn can boost heart rate and releases those feel good endorphins.

There’s even a group of experts who believe cold water treatment could be a powerful natural weapon against the symptoms of depression too. This was recently discussed in the BBC documentary where Dr Chris Van Tullekan prescribed a depressed patient a daily dose of cold water swimming to improve her mood. Enough reasons to twist that tap the opposite way tomorrow morning..?
