21 March is National Fragrance Day
BEAUTY TIPS | 21 March 2017
Passionate perfume lovers everywhere have never had a better excuse to sniff and spray to their heart’s content. For Tuesday 21st March is National Fragrance Day, officially the most sumptuously scented day of the year! As you prepare to waft your way over to your nearest beauty counter to inhale the latest must-have scents, don’t forget to look out for the heady offering of mini in-store workshops, free perfume consultations and special offers happening nationwide.
Trying out all the free testers is one thing, but as lots of us will testify, investing in the perfect forever fragrance can be a tricky task (we’re talking long term scent, not one-night-spritz!) The perfume you choose can leave a big impression on the people you meet, so it’s undoubtedly one of the most important pampering decisions you’ll make.
Smell is the most sensitive of the senses after all. Research has shown that 75 per cent of emotions are triggered by it and people can remember a particular scent with 65 per cent accuracy after a year, while visual recall is about 50 per cent after three months. If you want people to remember you (for the right reasons!) pick a distinctive fragrance that people may not have encountered before. And never over-drench.
Another important rule when selecting a scent is not to rush the selection process, says beauty guru and co-author of The Perfume Bible, Josephine Fairley. Choosing the right fragrance should be one of life’s pleasures, not a pain, she points out. Take your time and avoid purchasing on impulse at the Duty Free! We know all about this at Lypsyl HQ, where hours and hours were spent carefully selecting the new fragrance combinations for our updated range (hope you love them as much as we do!)

Start sampling different scents early in the day if you can, when your nose is ‘fresher’. Using perfume blotters is also better than spraying different scents all over too. They’ll help you remember which was which and you can take your shortlist home to confirm which ones you still love 24 hours later. Once you think you might have identified your signature scent, spray it on your skin and leave it a few hours to let the base notes come through.
Turning a blind eye to trendy labels is another top tip. Popular branding and famous faces sell scent, that’s for sure, but try not to be swayed by the lure of your favourite designer or celebrity’s endorsement. You won’t be short on temptation that’s for sure. These days it feels like almost every A-Lister has a fragrance dedicated to them, from Kim Kardashian and Beyonce to Kate Moss, Taylor Swift and even Michael Buble! Angelina Jolie is the latest star to join the Hollywood hall of fragrance fame alongside the likes of Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts. The actress, UN Ambassador and ex-of-Brad is the face of Guerlain’s new #MonGuerlain scent, launched this month.
